How Much Car Insurance Is Required By State

Most states set requirements for the liability portion of your car insurance coverage. When you
read the charts below here is what the numbers mean:
25/50/25 is shown for the state of Alabama, this means:
- $25,000 - Bodily injury liability for one person in an accident
- $50,000 - Bodily injury liability for everyone injured in an accident
- $25,000 - Property damage liability for one accident
Other states have established "No Fault" rules designed to reduce the number of lawsuits as
each person's insurance will pay for their own expenses.
PIP stands for Personal Injury Protection. All "No Fault" states require this type of
coverage to pay for personal injuries and in some cases lost wages or other damages.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage - This coverage pays you when you are injured by someone who
does not have proper insurance coverage. With this coverage, the insurance company will pay the difference
between what the offending driver can pay and what you should receive in compensation.
